Take part in one of Africa’s most extraordinary wildlife experiences with our 1-Day Gorilla Trekking Tour in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, Bwindi offers travelers a once-in-a-lifetime chance to come face-to-face with a gorilla family deep within the rainforest.
This quick yet intense day trip is perfect for travelers already staying near Bwindi or arriving early in the region (from Kabale, Kisoro, or Lake Bunyonyi). Guided by professional rangers, you’ll hike through lush forest trails, listening for rustles, chest-beats, and vocal calls — until you find your assigned gorilla group and spend a magical one hour observing these gentle giants in their natural habitat.
Your day starts early with pickup from your lodge near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (Rushaga, Buhoma, Ruhija, or Nkuringo sector). You’ll meet your local guide and transfer to the designated Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) briefing center, where the gorilla trekking adventure begins.
Upon arrival at the park headquarters, you will be registered and briefed by UWA rangers. During the briefing, you'll learn about gorilla behavior, safety guidelines, trekking etiquette, and be assigned to a specific gorilla family group depending on your fitness level and group size.
Trekking starts as you follow your guide and rangers into the dense rainforest. The hike can take anywhere between 1–6 hours, depending on where the gorillas nested the night before. Along the way, enjoy the sights and sounds of Bwindi’s rich biodiversity — home to primates, butterflies, birds, and rare plants.
Once your ranger locates the gorilla family, you will spend 1 full hour in their presence. You’ll observe their natural behavior — mothers grooming their babies, juveniles playing in the trees, and dominant silverbacks watching over the group.
Important: Photography is allowed, but flash is strictly prohibited.
After your memorable hour with the gorillas, you’ll begin your return hike to the starting point. Upon arrival, you will be awarded a Gorilla Trekking Certificate as a souvenir of your adventure.
Enjoy a packed lunch or meal at a nearby lodge, followed by scenic views of Bwindi hills, terraced farms, and local villages. For those staying overnight, you’ll be transferred back to your lodge for rest. For those on tight schedules, arrangements can be made to drop you off in Kabale, Kisoro, or Lake Bunyonyi.
